i.                    i. Teacher explains words often refer very simply to the thing or object that they name. That means they denote a meaning that is the same for everybody. A lot of scientific and technical jargon is denotative.
ii.                  ii. Words like carburettor, computer keyboard or facsimile serve as accurate labels and everybody who knows what they mean would have the same thing in mind.
iii.       iii. Teacher gets the students to determine which of the 10 words have a favourable or unfavourable connotation or are neutral.

i.                     Teacher explains that scanning is a selective reading process in which we try to locate facts quickly and find answers to specific questions.
ii.                   When we scan, we want to save time and you do not want to read every word on the page. Take a telephone book, for example.
iii.                  You don't read a telephone book, do you? If you want to look up someone's phone number, you begin by looking up the appropriate letter of the alphabet and then glancing down the list for the specific name.
iv.                 Teacher gets students to scan the pages of a dictionary, an index in a textbook, schedules, tables and charts or
advertisements in the newspaper for relevant information scanning can also help them to locate information quickly on specific topics for writing essays, term papers and reports.
